Abstract

The Convention was adopted 29 November 1969, Entered into force 19 June 1975, was replaced by 1992 Protocol and adopted on 27 November 1992. The Civil Liability Convention was created to ensure that adequate compensation is available to persons who suffer oil pollution damage resulting from maritime casualties involving oil-carrying ships. The Convention places the liability for such damage on the owner of the ship from which the polluting oil escaped or was discharged.
