Abstract
Published in October 2026, The UK and the Arctic: An Update to the United Kingdom’s Arctic Policy Framework outlines the UK’s response to environmental, geopolitical and economic developments in the region since its 2023 framework. It identifies five priorities: understanding and responding to a changing Arctic; enhancing security and stability; supporting strong and effective governance; building responsible trade and economic partnerships; and strengthening resilience. The document emphasises polar research, collaboration with Indigenous communities and the contribution of both scientific and traditional knowledge to understanding environmental change. It sets out a NATO-first approach to deterrence and defence, while reaffirming support for the Arctic Council, rules-based international governance, sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also addresses opportunities for responsible economic engagement, including maritime services, ports, space capabilities and technological innovation, alongside the need to manage environmental and security risks.
